The outside might catch you with its humble frontage, but once inside, the space unfolds with vibrant tile work and a lively yet comforting rhythm that invites both quick stops and relaxed meals. There’s a warmth here that extends beyond the kitchen — a genuine family vibe where the buzz of friendly chatter threads through the air, balanced by the occasional calm of morning hours when the place takes on a serene, easy-going pace.
The atmosphere is unpretentious and welcoming, where the pace of service meets the expectations of those who come with hunger and the hope for familiarity. This is a spot where conversations flow freely around tables filled with plates that tell stories — the kind that make you appreciate the rich textures of lovingly prepared food without fuss. In the kitchen, the menu is a canvas of authentic Mexican cuisine that effortlessly connects with the mood of the day. From the robust heartiness of traditional soups to the crunch and sizzle of freshly fried dishes, the offerings mirror the vibrant diversity of the culture, all served in portions that meet the needs of families, solo diners, and everyone in between. The thoughtful touches — like a side of crunchy fries or an expertly poured horchata — evoke moments where food is more than sustenance; it’s an experience to be savored and shared.
El Grullense manages to be both a dependable stop for a quick, affordable meal and a destination that rewards those who linger. The service, attentive yet unobtrusive, reflects a clear pride in the food and the atmosphere, making guests feel genuinely seen, whether they’re rushing through a busy evening or settling in for a calm morning start. If you find yourself passing through or looking for a lively local flavor in Salem, this is the kind of place where the simple pleasures of good food and human connection come together quietly, without fanfare but with unmistakable heart.

Passing through town heading to PDX motels booked so found one down the street. We were told to go eat at this Mexican food restaurant. I think it was tasty, affordable, and just the right quantity definitely a family vibe with amazing tile work. The outside does not give the inside enough credit.

My son and I went there after his LaCrosse practice. He got four chicken tacos and I got a chicken burrito. Everything was made very quickly and was hot, fresh and delicious! We got there at about 7:40 P.M. so the drive thru was pretty busy. So we chose to go inside to sit down and eat. My only suggestion would be to put prices on the television menus. When we ordered we had no idea how much things cost? So our four small tacos, burrito and one pop was $21.95. A little expensive! Not sure how much anything cost, but I guess next time I'll go thru the drive thru and see!
